01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
CO2Stats (also called Enernetics) was a Cambridge, Massachusetts startup in Y Combinator's Summer 2008 batch that provided social and environmental web analytics. It calculated the greenhouse gas footprint of visits to a website - based on visitor and server locations, device types, screen sizes, local fuel mixes and download sizes - and each month purchased Green-E certified renewable energy certificates to offset its customers' carbon footprint. Customers included IBM.
