Ozy Media
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Ozy Media was a digital media company founded in 2013 by Carlos Watson that produced news, podcasts, TV shows and events for a young, diverse audience. It raised about $70 million from investors and claimed a large digital audience, hosting the annual Ozy Fest festival. The company positioned itself as a fresh voice in media, expanding into newsletters, video series and live events.
02 / Ozy Media FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Ozy collapsed after a fraud scandal destroyed its credibility. In September 2021 a major newspaper reported that co-founder and COO Samir Rao had impersonated a YouTube executive on a call with Goldman Sachs to secure a $40 million investment, and documented inflated audience claims. Advertisers and investors fled; the board announced closure on October 1. Watson briefly reversed the decision, but the company never recovered. In 2024 Watson was convicted of conspiracy to commit wire and securities fraud and aggravated identity theft.
03 / EVENT HISTORY

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Fabricated metrics work until one diligence call exposes them; then everything unwinds at once.
- 02
A board that announces closure cannot rebuild trust with a reversal three days later.
- 03
When the founder is the fraud story, there is no separating the person from the company.
