01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Farfetch was a luxury fashion marketplace founded in 2008 in Porto by José Neves, connecting independent boutiques and luxury brands with over 4 million customers worldwide. It went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2018, and at its peak was one of the most valuable luxury e-commerce platforms. In late 2023, facing a critical cash shortage, Farfetch was rescued by South Korean e-commerce group Coupang and Greenoaks Capital through a $500 million bridge loan and a UK pre-pack administration; the acquisition completed in early 2024, wiping out all existing shareholders including founder José Neves. The operating business continues under Coupang ownership, and Farfetch Limited itself remains in official liquidation in the Cayman Islands.
