01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
The Center for Breakthrough Medicines (CBM) is a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) focused on cell and gene therapies, founded in 2019 by Audrey Greenberg and her team at Discovery Labs. Built inside Discovery Labs' three-million-square-foot integrated life-science hub in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania — converting a former GSK R&D headquarters — it was billed as the largest single-site cell and gene therapy CDMO in the world, with 700,000 square feet of plasmid DNA manufacturing, viral vector manufacturing and cell therapy production, plus process and analytical development, testing and regulatory expertise. It offers an end-to-end, one-source solution covering a therapy's full life cycle: process development, viral vector manufacturing, GMP testing, cell therapy bioprocessing, plasmid production and cell banking. In 2022 SK pharmteco invested $350 million and acquired a controlling interest, adding CBM's expertise to its portfolio of end-to-end, multi-modality client support.
