01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Blueboard SaaS was the software-as-a-service employee recognition platform operated by Blueboard, founded in 2014 by Taylor Smith and Kevin Yip. Delivered as a cloud platform for HR teams, it replaced cash bonuses and gift cards with hand-curated experiential rewards - spa days, concerts, surf lessons, bucket-list travel - and added engagement reporting, peer-to-peer recognition and flexible delivery to deskless workers via web, mobile, TV displays and print. The B2B SaaS business grew to over 500 client companies and around 200 employees before shutting down abruptly on March 12, 2024.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

On March 12, 2024 Blueboard announced the immediate shutdown of its SaaS platform; the service went dark and hundreds of thousands of employees were left with pre-funded but unredeemed rewards.

  2. 02

The company had burned through about $15.8 million in cash across its lifetime, serving over 500 customers with around 200 employees.

  3. 03

Competitor Salt Labs set up a $20,000 relief fund for employees affected by the sudden shutdown.

  4. 04

No reliable realized loss figure with clear subject, period and basis has been disclosed; cash burned and stranded customer rewards are not substitutes for a loss figure.
