01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Goldfinch Finance was a decentralized credit protocol that connected investor capital with real-world borrowers through undercollateralized on-chain lending. Built by Warbler Labs and founded in 2020, it was backed by Andreessen Horowitz and Coinbase Ventures, raising $11 million in June 2021. The protocol facilitated roughly $100 million in loans. In February 2025 it launched Goldfinch Prime, giving non-US investors on-chain exposure to private credit pools managed by firms such as Apollo, Ares and Golub Capital.

02 / Goldfinch Finance FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Goldfinch failed after its borrower pools encountered serious performance issues, triggering years of restructuring, legal proceedings and recoveries. Its pivot product, Goldfinch Prime, did not achieve the adoption needed to justify continued investment in development, marketing or operations. The GFI governance token fell about 99.8% from its January 2022 all-time high. In June 2026 token holders voted overwhelmingly to stop new protocol development, wind down Goldfinch Prime and place the protocol in maintenance mode.
