Braid
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Braid was a San Francisco-based consumer payments startup founded in January 2019 by Amanda Peyton and Todd Berman (who left in 2020). It aimed to make shared wallets mainstream: an FDIC-insured, multi-user account that let friends and family pool, manage and spend money together. Users could create cash pools toward a collective goal - say, saving for a trip to Europe - and spend the money on airfare or lodging with a branded debit card. The company raised $10 million over multiple rounds from Index Ventures, Accel and Conversion Capital, and shut down in September 2023.
02 / Braid FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The biggest setback was a problem with Braid's sponsor bank, which left the company effectively in a coma from July 2022 to January 2023 - without a sponsor bank it could not operate at all. Even after a replacement was found, the company kept struggling. A second structural issue was dependence on third-party software: building a multiplayer product meant every partner could cause problems, and third-party fees ate the margins, forcing a belated move to build most infrastructure in-house. The founder ultimately concluded the business would not be viable and closed it in an orderly way: every customer dollar was cashed out and every employee was treated with care.
