Arivale
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Arivale provided genetic-testing-based personal-health services.
02 / Arivale FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Arivale's own message to customers said the cost of providing the program exceeded what customers could pay. Genetic, blood and microbiome testing was described by CEO Clayton Lewis as extremely expensive, and the company never mastered customer acquisition, spending about $50 million while serving only around 5,000 members. Prices fell from $3,500 a year to $99 a month, but the service never reached viable scale. In April 2019 it abruptly ceased operations and laid off about 120 employees.
