Smashing
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Smashing was an AI-powered reading curation app founded by Goodreads founder Otis Chandler and launched in June 2024. It let users aggregate and curate news articles, blog posts, podcasts and social media posts in one place: users followed interests, submitted content, voted on relevance, and got AI-powered summaries plus a bot that could answer questions. The seven-person company raised $3.4 million from True Ventures, Blockchange, Offline Ventures, Advancit Capital, Power of N Ventures and angel investors.
02 / Smashing FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Smashing could not grow fast enough to become sustainable. In an email to customers announcing the closure, the company wrote: 'We simply didn't grow fast enough to keep going. We weren't able to scale it into a sustainable product.' It faced a crowded field of AI news readers (Bulletin, Particle) and feed aggregators (Feeeed, Tapestry, Reeder), shortly after Instagram's co-founders shut down their own AI news app Artifact.
