Mindstrong Health
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Mindstrong Health was a Palo Alto-based digital mental health startup founded in 2014 by Dr. Paul Dagum, with former NIMH director Dr. Thomas Insel as co-founder and president. It built a smartphone platform that turned patterns of typing, tapping and scrolling into 'digital biomarkers' of mood and cognition, and later added virtual therapy and psychiatric care services. It raised $160 million in venture capital, including a $14 million Series A in 2016 and a $100 million Series C in May 2020, before winding down operations and selling its technology assets to SonderMind in early 2023.
02 / Mindstrong Health FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Mindstrong raised $160 million but could not make its economics work. After pivoting from digital biomarkers to app-based care delivery, it discovered patients and payers would not pay enough to sustain the operation. Pivots, executive turnover and a harsher funding environment in 2022-2023 left it unable to raise new capital, so it ended patient services in March 2023 and shut down.
