01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
CareLedger (YC Summer 2015) was a healthcare cost-reduction platform for employers, based in San Francisco/Sunnyvale, California. It offered pricing data on local healthcare providers, steering employees to high-quality in-network providers at lower cost — e.g. finding a well-rated doctor willing to charge around $1,500 for a procedure that could range up to $10,000. Employers only paid CareLedger when the startup reduced costs enough that procedures became free to the employee, with no deductibles or co-pays. It raised a seed round from Y Combinator and Social Starts (about $120K total per PitchBook) and later ceased operations; PitchBook records it as out of business as of October 2017.
