01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Firefox is the open-source web browser developed by the Mozilla Corporation (the commercial arm of the non-profit Mozilla Foundation), launched in 2004 as the community-driven challenger to Internet Explorer. Funded overwhelmingly by search-engine default deals (about 95% of its ~$451M 2018 revenue came from Google, Yandex, and Baidu), Firefox long held the position of the leading independent browser alternative to Google Chrome and Microsoft's browsers. In August 2020, Mozilla announced a major restructuring: cutting about 250 employees (25% of its workforce), closing its Taipei, Taiwan operations, and refocusing Firefox on core browser growth while investing in new products (Pocket, VPN, privacy tools).

- Restructuring
In August 2020, Mozilla laid off about 250 employees (a quarter of its workforce) and shut its Taipei operations, citing pandemic-hit revenue; CEO Mitchell Baker said the pre-COVID plan was 'no longer workable.' The company refocused Firefox on core browser growth and new revenue-generating products.
