Rent Nest
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Rent Nest was an app co-founded by Steven Glod that let users gather and share information about rental properties — a crowdsourced way to research houses for rent. The company raised some money from friends and family and was accepted into a startup accelerator, running for about two years.
02 / Rent Nest FAILURE REASONS
Why it failed
Rent Nest never got its unit economics right. It grew revenue to $12,000 a month, but was spending over $40,000 a month — a gap it could never close. The co-founder blamed a chronic lack of money plus a broken partnership: the founders did not trust each other enough to let one person take full control, so they spread themselves too thin instead of focusing on one thing. He also felt the accelerator offered little support, and admitted they were too conservative with money — spending a little on many things rather than enough on one bet to prove or kill a hypothesis. Out of money, the founders went their separate ways; the co-founder joined Machinio a month before the final shutdown decision.
