01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Filestack is a San Antonio-based file-handling service for developers, founded in 2012 as FilePicker.io by four MIT students — Brett Van Zuiden, Liyan David Chang, Anand Dass, and Thomas Georgiou. Its single API handles the whole file journey: uploads with high reliability, image/document transformations via URL parameters, content delivery over CDN, and workflow automation (Filestack Workflows) with AI tagging, OCR, and virus detection. Rebranded from Ink to Filestack in 2015, it grew to serve 100,000 apps. The company was acquired twice — including by Idera, Inc. in 2022 — and is now wholly owned by private equity firms; the original founding team left in 2014.
