Embark
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Embark Technology was an autonomous-trucking company founded in 2016 by Alex Rodrigues and Brandon Moak. It built the Embark Driver, a self-driving software stack for Class 8 semi-trucks running interstate highway freight lanes, and went public on Nasdaq (EMBK) in November 2021 through a SPAC merger with Northern Genesis Acquisition Corp II at a valuation of about $5.2 billion.
02 / Embark FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Embark never made meaningful revenue; capital markets shut on pre-revenue AV plays as OEM timelines slipped. In March 2023 it cut ~70% of staff — about 230 people — closed its California and Houston offices, and began winding down while the board weighed sale or liquidation. Applied Intuition's $71M all-cash acquisition, announced May 2023 and closed that August, absorbed its tools, data and software at a fraction of its SPAC valuation.
