01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Tilt (originally Crowdtilt) was a San Francisco group-payments and crowdfunding startup founded in 2012 by James Beshara and Khaled Hussein out of Y Combinator. Its platform let friends and communities collect money online for anything from parties and gifts to trips and charitable causes, releasing campaign funds only when a campaign hit its self-set goal. In 2017 Airbnb bought the company in an acqui-hire and retired the Tilt platform.
