01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Birdy (TheBirdy.com) was a personal expense-tracking web app built by Brooklyn entrepreneur Corey Maass. Instead of requiring users to visit a website, it sent one email a day asking subscribers to reply with their daily expenses and tags (#lunch, #clothes, #date), then tracked, recorded and organised the spending with graphs. The free tier offered tracking and charts; $5 per month ($39.95 per year) added budgets, income tracking and recurring events. It targeted people who wanted spending discipline without handing a third party access to their bank accounts. The company is believed to be the same entity whose reported failure was recorded in 2018; note the founding-year discrepancy discussed in notes.
