Fast Radius
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Fast Radius was a Chicago-based digital manufacturing company founded in 2017 by Lou Rassey, backed by UPS with $48 million in early investment. Its Cloud Manufacturing Platform let engineers upload a CAD file and get an instant cost to create and deliver parts, producing over 15 million parts across 150,000+ designs for automotive, aerospace, and consumer-goods customers using additive and subtractive methods. In July 2021 it agreed to a $1.4 billion SPAC merger with ECP Environmental Growth Opportunities, listing on Nasdaq at a $995 million combined valuation with $445 million in cash raised. But the capital markets turned: in November 2022 Fast Radius filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware, and a month later Detroit-based SyBridge Technologies acquired most of its operating assets for $15.9 million, keeping the brand alive.
02 / Fast Radius FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors
Advisor Lincoln International’s deal note states Fast Radius’s Feb 2022 de-SPAC saw ~91% stockholder redemptions, raising only $106M gross vs $300–445M anticipated; after a strategic-alternatives process the company filed bankruptcy restructuring, with Alvarez & Marsal citing liquidity challenges that drove a tight timeline.
~91% de-SPAC redemptions left ~$106M gross vs $300–445M anticipated (Lincoln).
A&M: liquidity challenges drove a very tight timeline into the Ch.11 sale process.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Asset restructuring
Fast Radius’s 8-K states it and subsidiaries filed bankruptcy restructuring in Delaware on 7 Nov 2022 (Case No. 22-11051) to continue as debtors-in-possession and pursue a structured sale of assets. Court later approved SyBridge’s ~$17M bankruptcy asset purchase (Dec 2022).
