01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Tensil was a San Francisco open-source ML accelerator company, co-founded by Tom as a Y Combinator Summer 2019 batch member. It designed free and open-source machine-learning inference accelerators — a model compiler plus a hardware generator that produces custom systolic-array accelerator RTL for FPGAs — aimed at giving smaller companies, students and hobbyists the custom ML hardware that giants like Google and Meta built for themselves. It raised a $150,000 seed round in August 2019.
