01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Xingsheng Youxuan is a Chinese community group-buying platform founded in 2018 out of the Furong Xingsheng convenience-store chain. Customers pre-order fresh groceries and daily goods through a WeChat mini-program and pick them up next day at neighborhood stores run by commission-earning community leaders. During the 2020-2021 group-buying war it raised roughly $1.5 billion within a single year and reached a peak valuation of about $5 billion in early 2021. After retreating to its strongholds in Hunan, Hubei and Jiangxi provinces, the company remains operating and was still expanding in its core markets as of 2025.
