01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Genie (genie.io) was a London-based inventory management platform for fast-growing Shopify merchants, founded by Sebastiaan Debrouwere, a former venture investor at Balderton Capital. It helped online sellers manage inventory, automate reordering and streamline supplier relationships, with real-time tracking, AI forecasting, automated purchase orders and a network of 20,000 suppliers; it supported more than 300 merchants processing over $18 million in supplier orders per month. The company raised a $5.8 million seed round in August 2022 led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA), with GFC, Tiny VC and e-commerce angels participating. In July 2025 it was acquired by Doss, a San Francisco AI-native ERP company, and Debrouwere joined Doss as head of partnerships and ecosystem.
