01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Burrata was an identity startup building developer tools to bridge personal data into Web3. Founded by Ian Place (a Chainalysis veteran) and Osama Khan (previously at customer data platform Segment), it offered a compliance toolkit to make know-your-customer (KYC) checks a more seamless developer experience for crypto startups: projects could issue 'digital identity tokens' composed of identity, credit score and reputation data that stick with a user's wallet, letting users pass KYC gates without re-verifying or handing over their data, and revoke the token at any time. It came out of stealth in December 2021, raising $7.75 million in a seed round from payments company Stripe and crypto venture firm Variant, alongside IDEO CoLab, Slow Ventures, Baller, Stratos and others.
