01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Motorleaf was a Montreal-based agricultural technology startup founded in 2016 by co-founder and CEO Alastair Monk. It developed a 'digital agronomist': yield-predicting machine learning algorithms and indoor growth sensors that monitored greenhouse growing conditions, helping greenhouse tomato and pepper producers forecast harvests, cut prediction errors, reduce water use and detect diseases before they spread. In May 2018 Motorleaf closed a $2.85 million financing round led by Radicle Growth with Desjardins Capital, Real Ventures, Fluxunit and BDC Capital, and partnered with Dutch greenhouse supplier Cultilene. No shutdown, bankruptcy or acquisition has been publicly reported.
