01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
ClassTag was a New York-based unified family communication and engagement platform for educators, schools and districts, founded in 2015 by Vlada Lotkina and Jason Olim. Its free app let teachers communicate and coordinate with families — events, field trips, fundraisers, parent-teacher conferences — reaching parents through their preferred channel (SMS, email, app, web or even paper) with automatic translation into 60–100+ languages, plus a parent-engagement dashboard for teachers. It grew to about 2 million users across 25,000 US schools (34 employees) after raising roughly $7 million in seed funding, and later to over 5 million families. In August 2023, K-12 data and communications provider SchoolStatus acquired ClassTag in its entirety — operations and technology — integrating it into its data and school-home communications platform.

- Founded
Founded in New York by Vlada Lotkina and Jason Olim as a free parent-teacher communication platform, born from Lotkina's own experience as a working parent.
- $5M seed
Raised $5 million in seed funding (AlleyCorp, Contour Ventures, Founder Collective and others), bringing total seed funding to about $7 million; 2 million users across 25,000 US schools; 34 employees.
- Acquired by SchoolStatus
In August 2023 SchoolStatus acquired ClassTag in its entirety — operations and technology; the 5-million-family platform was integrated into SchoolStatus' data and school-home communications platform, with free users keeping access. This was an acquisition, not a failure.
