01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

ZITICITY was a Vilnius-based urban logistics startup founded in 2017 by Laimonas Noreika, Karolis Januškas and Vytautas Noreika. It gave local merchants same-day and same-hour delivery through a platform connecting e-commerce stores with urban hubs and on-demand couriers, letting small businesses compete with Amazon without their own distribution centers. At its peak the company had 110 employees, 700 business clients across five markets, €2.2 million in annual recurring revenue and over one million deliveries. It closed in early 2023 and was liquidated.

02 / ZITICITY FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

ZITICITY grew revenue ninefold in twelve months, but the expansion that drove the growth also drove a burn rate equal to the top-line revenue. Quality logistics requires warehouses, equipment, cars and couriers — heavy capital investment with a long payback — and when the company needed to raise its Series A, financial markets had started rewarding efficiency over growth at all costs. The company was bleeding cash. The founders tried everything to save it: a turnaround strategy, multiple internal financing rounds and pursuing M&A opportunities. When none of those worked, they made the decision to liquidate the company in early 2023.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

Revenue growth that costs as much as it earns is not growth — it is a burn rate wearing a costume.

  2. 02

Capital-heavy logistics needs a long payback; raising into a market that rewards efficiency over growth is a bad time to need a Series A.

  3. 03

When turnaround, internal rounds and M&A all fail, liquidate decisively rather than drift.

  4. 04

Build the efficiency case before the market turns, not after the cash is gone.
