Brandless
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Brandless was a San Francisco-based direct-to-consumer e-commerce company founded in 2016 by Ido Leffler and Tina Sharkey. It launched in 2017 selling 'better-for-you' non-perishable food and household goods - organic cashew butter, cruelty-free moisturizer and the like - with one uniform price of $3 on everything. The thesis was to eliminate the 'brand tax': no brand labels, no marketing splurge, savings passed to the consumer. The company raised about $292 million in total, including a $240 million investment from SoftBank's Vision Fund in July 2018 that valued it at over $500 million. It shut down in February 2020, the first Vision Fund-backed startup to fold; its assets were later bought by Clarke Capital Partners and relaunched.
02 / Brandless FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The uniform-$3 model proved unsustainable in the fiercely competitive direct-to-consumer market: the company said that market had 'proven unsustainable for our current business model.' It never built enough word-of-mouth and customer loyalty to win without brand marketing - ironic for a company whose thesis was that branding was wasted money. SoftBank's funding arrived in tranches tied to milestones, and after missed milestones the third tranche of about $120 million never materialized, leaving the company without the cash to continue. Attempts to fix the model - raising prices beyond $3 in January 2019 and pushing into brick-and-mortar retail - came too late.

- Product or service closed
CNBC (10 Feb 2020): Brandless confirmed it would lay off 70 people (~90% of staff) and shut down business operations, keeping 10 employees to finish remaining orders. CNBC called it the first SoftBank Vision Fund-backed startup to fail. Later 2020 asset purchase/relaunch by Clarke Capital is a post-wind-down residual sale, not this record’s going-concern continuation.
