Botnim
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Botnim was a B2B2C web application (botnim.co) that showed nearby restaurant dishes along with their nutritional values, letting users filter by location, nutritional content and preferences such as vegan or vegetarian. It was founded in 2016 by Shaked Klein Orbach, a software engineer, and Gilad Peled, a former consulting analyst, initially targeting health-conscious diners in Tel Aviv. The product started as a Messenger chatbot, but after slowness issues embarrassed the team in front of business owners, it was rebuilt as a map-based web app. The business model counted on three revenue sources: restaurants paying for dish listings and promotion, users paying for premium searches such as allergen filters, and commissions from the laboratory that analyzed the dishes.
02 / Botnim FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The main cause, in the founders' own words, was failing to validate the market and taking the wrong direction: people who eat out usually do not care enough about what they eat, while people who care enough cook at home - eating out is their cheat day. On top of that came a classic chicken-and-egg trap: restaurants wanted to see users before paying for dish listings, but users would not come without restaurants. And the team had no capital to break the deadlock: each laboratory dish check cost about $80, and they could not afford to pay for all checks as a proof of concept or hire someone to ferry dishes to the lab. The venture ran entirely on the founders' own money.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Founded in Tel Aviv
Shaked Klein Orbach and Gilad Peled started Botnim in mid-2016, after Shaked's return to Tel Aviv from Berlin, as a Messenger chatbot for finding dishes by nutritional value.
- Chatbot to web app pivot
After Messenger bot slowness issues, the team rebuilt Botnim as a map-based web application (botnim.co) showing dishes filterable by nutritional values and food preferences.
- Reported failure
The founders described the closure in a published interview: unvalidated market assumptions, the restaurant-user chicken-and-egg, and no capital to fund dish checks or growth.

Overall assessment: Not completed
05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Botnim was built entirely with the founders' own money; no outside investment was ever raised.
- 02
Each laboratory dish analysis cost about $80, which the founders split with participating restaurants - an unsustainable subsidy for a two-person bootstrapped team.
- 03
The company closed after failing to validate the market or break the restaurant-user chicken-and-egg; the failure was publicly reported in 2019.
- 04
No reliable realized loss figure with clear subject, period and basis has been disclosed; the founders stated they used only their own money.
