01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
FiftyThree was a New York City technology company founded in 2011 by ex-Microsoft colleagues Georg Petschnigg, Jonathan Harris, Julian Walker, and Andrew S. Allen, building 'beautifully simple tools for creativity.' It made Paper — Apple's 2012 iPad App of the Year, downloaded 25 million times — the Pencil digital stylus, and Paste, a collaborative presentation tool used by 100,000+ creative teams. Backed by Andreessen Horowitz, NEA, Thrive Capital, and Jack Dorsey, it raised more than $45 million. On August 21, 2018, WeTransfer acquired FiftyThree's assets and patents (but not the company itself); 12 of its 14 employees, including the entire executive team, joined WeTransfer, and Paper and Paste became WeTransfer products.
