Fermyon Technologies was a WebAssembly (Wasm) startup founded in 2021 by Matt Butcher and Radu Matei, aiming to use Wasm and the Wasmtime runtime as a lightweight replacement for containers or virtual machines when running microservices. Its open-source Spin framework — for building and running microservices on Wasmtime — hit 1,000 GitHub stars within six weeks of release, and the company offered Fermyon Cloud, a functions-as-a-service platform similar to AWS Lambda. It raised $6 million in seed funding led by Amplify Partners and a $20 million Series A round. On December 1, 2025, Akamai Technologies announced it had acquired Fermyon to expand its edge serverless platform; the co-founders joined Akamai's Cloud Technology Group, and Akamai said it would continue supporting Spin and SpinKube.
