Newslabs
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
NewsLabs (operating its product NewsTilt) was a Y Combinator Winter 2010 startup that built a content network around individual journalists. Credentialed writers could publish independently while the platform handled advertising, SEO, traffic generation, and community management — promising them personal online brands and audiences. Founded by Paul Biggar and Nathan Chong, the company operated for eight months; NewsTilt itself was live for only two months before shutting down on June 26, 2010. The founders returned the remaining funds to investors; Biggar went on to join Mozilla and later founded CircleCI.
02 / Newslabs FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
NewsLabs failed on both product and founder levels. The product launched critically incomplete — the core promise of journalist-owned personal domains and brands was stripped to meet a deadline — and never gained traction: journalists stopped posting, readers never arrived, and promised features shipped too slowly. The founders' own autopsy lists co-founder communication breakdown between Biggar and Chong, lost faith of the journalists, lack of intrinsic motivation for journalism, and dwindling funds they could not replenish. With motivation destroyed and no money to fix the issues, they shut down and returned the remaining $20,000 to investors.
