Singulution
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Singulution was a one-person startup founded in June 2017 by Hunt Burdick, a software engineer who left Arista Networks and self-funded the venture with his stock options and 401(k). It set out to build a full-duplex, real-time point-of-sale and business management system for multi-location vendors, using Ruby on Rails and React with websocket connections. It never launched or made any revenue.
02 / Singulution FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Singulution failed because its founder built for 10 months in a vacuum: he spent all his time on technically advanced real-time infrastructure instead of engaging customers, never shipped an MVP, and kept the project secret while the feature set grew too deep and monolithic. With established competitors far ahead and his ~$30,000 personal runway exhausted, he could not validate the idea and ran out of money.
