01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Fonpods, Inc. was a Los Angeles-area (Hermosa Beach, California) startup that debuted a mobile podcasting service in September 2006. Its proprietary platform gave any phone — mobile, landline or VoIP — cost-free access to digital audio content: users signed up on the website, subscribed to podcasts from a searchable catalog, created personal listening 'channels,' and then simply dialed an access number to hear podcasts streamed over the call. The service also let users organize, tag and rate podcasts from any web browser. Fonpods was exhibited at DEMOfall 2006; no failure event has been reported.
