Pepper Pantry
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Pepper Pantry was not a standalone company but a consumer-facing portal launched in 2020 by Pepper, the New York-based B2B food-distribution platform co-founded in 2019 by Bowie Cheung, Chetan Narain and Ivana Tesanovic. As restaurant closures wiped out distributors' customers during the pandemic, Pepper pivoted and opened Pepper Pantry (PepperGroceries.com) so everyday consumers could order directly from food distributors — fresh meats, produce, dairy and more — delivered to their homes for a flat $5 payments processing fee.
02 / Pepper Pantry FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Pepper Pantry was a crisis-time pivot, not a sustainable business. As the pandemic eased and restaurants reopened, distributors returned to their core customers and Pepper refocused on its original B2B ordering platform for food distributors — the model that later won $16 million Series A (led by Index Ventures) and a $30 million Series B. The consumer portal was retired as Pepper 'got back to its roots' serving distributors, and the parent company itself continued to thrive.
