01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Keychain Logistics was a US freight startup launched in 2012, building an automated brokerage and smartphone app connecting shippers directly with independent truckers - an early attempt at the 'Uberization of trucking'. The app opened with brokered loads from PostEverywhere.com and other load boards to attract drivers, and in 2013 the company began approaching shippers to bring direct freight into the system, handling paperwork, direct-deposit payments and GPS tracking. It was Y Combinator-funded and raised a $2.5 million seed round in January 2013.

Failure factors
Founder Bryan Beshore wrote Keychain shut down because it was too early to market: LTL worked for a while but LTL providers repeatedly disintermediated the platform to deal directly with customers, and the truckload market it originally targeted struggled.
