01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Mira (Mira Labs) was a Los Angeles-based augmented reality hardware startup founded in 2016 by entrepreneur Ben Taft. It began with the Mira Prism, a $99 smartphone-based AR headset with an SDK for developers, and later pivoted to enterprise and industrial rollouts: it supplied AR headsets for Universal Studios' Nintendo World theme park attractions, including the Mario Kart ride, and held contracts with the U.S. Air Force and Navy. Investors including Blue Bear Capital, Happiness Ventures and Sequoia put about $17 million into the company. In June 2023, Apple acquired Mira for an undisclosed amount, the day after unveiling its Vision Pro headset.
