01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Outbound.io, founded in 2013 in San Francisco by former Nest senior software engineer Dhruvkaran Mehta and Josh Weissburg, was a web-based messaging tool that organized customer messages around actions users took: brands could send targeted messages to customers through SMS, responsive email, web, or push notifications. A Y Combinator alumnus, it raised about 2.07 million dollars and was acquired by Zendesk in May 2017, where the whole team was retained and the product absorbed Zendesk's Connect offering for customer segmentation and push engagement.
