01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Fifth Eye was an Ann Arbor, Michigan-based medical device software startup, a spinout from the University of Michigan founded in 2017 and led by CEO Jen Baird. It built clinical early-warning systems for hospitals: real-time analytics that interpret a single existing electrocardiogram (ECG) waveform — using machine learning — to detect hemodynamic instability (when blood flow to vital organs degrades) before patients show distress, warning of impending low blood pressure, cardiac arrest, or heart failure. It raised $2.4 million in seed funding (2018) from Invest Michigan and 35 investors, then an $11.5 million Series A (2019) led by Arboretum Ventures and Cultivation Capital, with the University of Michigan endowment's MINTS participating, to secure FDA clearance of its first product, the Analytic for Hemodynamic Instability (AHI).
