01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Body Labs was a Manhattan-based artificial intelligence startup founded in 2013. Its SOMA technology used AI trained on body data plus computer vision to create realistic, true-to-life 3D models of the human body from scans or images, including 3D motion and shape. The software had business-to-business applications such as letting shoppers virtually try on clothing and generating gaming avatars that follow the human body. The company raised more than $10 million, including an $8 million Series A in November 2015, and was acquired by Amazon in October 2017 for an undisclosed sum reported at $50-100 million.
