01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
June was a smart oven startup founded in 2013 by Matt Van Horn (co-founder of Zimride, which became Lyft) and Nikhil Bhogal, both former Apple engineers. The June Oven sold for $1,495 and packed a built-in scale, restaurant-grade heating elements, a camera and AI food-recognition software able to identify foods such as chicken breast and cook them perfectly. It raised about $29.5 million from investors including the Amazon Alexa Fund, Lerer Hippeau, M13 and Lumia Capital. In January 2021 it was acquired by Weber for undisclosed terms and became a strategic business unit; Weber stopped making June ovens in 2022 and shut off the app and cloud services on September 22, 2026.
