01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
MyMiniLife was a Palo Alto-based virtual-world startup founded in 2006 by students from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, led by CEO Sizhao Yang. Its Flash client let users build and decorate virtual homes — Sims-like apartments customizable down to the furniture — embeddable in any site (MySpace, Yahoo!) and populated with chat, streaming music and video; users bought 130 million virtual goods and the site grew to 4 million registered users. In late 2009 Zynga acquired MyMiniLife (terms undisclosed) — a company-making deal whose technology spawned FarmVille.
