Nikola Motors
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Nikola Corporation built zero-emission heavy trucks — battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell semis — plus hydrogen refueling infrastructure under its HYLA brand. Founded in 2015 by Trevor Milton, it went public in 2020 via a SPAC merger at a $12 billion valuation and briefly reached a $34 billion market cap, exceeding Ford, despite near-zero revenue. After founder fraud allegations and a string of losses, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware on February 19, 2025, with $47 million in cash on hand and an asset auction scheduled for April 2025.
02 / Nikola Motors FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Nikola's core product was a story, not a truck. In September 2020 short-seller Hindenburg Research exposed that the famous Nikola One 'in motion' video showed a non-functional prototype rolling downhill by gravity, and that many of founder Trevor Milton's technology claims were false. Milton resigned, was convicted of securities and wire fraud in October 2022, and was sentenced to four years in prison in 2023; the company paid $125 million to settle SEC fraud charges in 2021. Stripped of credibility, Nikola burned through cash trying to commercialize hydrogen trucks, never reaching sustainable sales. In February 2025 it filed for Chapter 11 listing $1–10 billion in liabilities against $500 million–$1 billion in assets, shrinking to a single employee managing the liquidation. Milton was pardoned by President Trump in March 2025.
