Vibra
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Vibra was a Pan-African P2P cryptocurrency trading app created by the African Blockchain Lab and co-founded by Vincent Li, a founding partner of web3 accelerator Adaverse. Its mission was to drive mass adoption of digital assets and blockchain technologies in Africa; it also ran #VibraInClass, a program paying blockchain tutors to teach Africans about crypto. The company had raised $6 million in VC funding from investors including Lateral Frontiers, Dragonfly Capital, CRE Venture Capital and Musha Ventures.
02 / Vibra FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The crypto market slowdown in 2022-2023 dried up venture funding and trading volumes across Africa. Vibra's growth model relied on costly incentives for customer acquisition - paying tutors and students to join - which burned cash without building sustainable revenue. Former employees reported the startup had not been generating enough revenue and could not turn its user-education efforts into commensurate turnover, leading staff to be asked to resign or be fired.
