01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

GroupSpaces was a London startup founded in 2007 by Oxford students David Langer and Andy Young. It gave real-world groups and clubs an online home: group websites, mailing lists, membership databases, event management and member payments. Backed by a $1.3 million seed round from Index Ventures, Dave McClure, Chris Sacca and Simon Levene, it grew to three million group memberships across more than 100 countries.

02 / GroupSpaces FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

GroupSpaces died slowly, then all at once. Co-founder David Langer left in 2012; co-founder Andy Young walked away in April 2013, after which the company became a ghost operation with no customer support and no development — yet the site kept running for eight more years. The core problem was revenue: the service never made enough money to maintain itself as a business, and free group organizers would not convert to paid plans at the needed scale. On January 2, 2021 the company finally announced closure effective April 2021, erasing all group data the following month.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

A ghost operation can run for years — but unmaintained software is a shutdown waiting for a date

  2. 02

Free group organizers are loyal users and terrible customers: 3M memberships could not pay the bills

  3. 03

When both founders leave, the company is over; the 2021 announcement just made it official

  4. 04

Shutting down with data exports and refunds is the decent exit — GroupSpaces gave users four months
