Thrasio
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Thrasio was a Walpole, Massachusetts-based Amazon aggregator founded in 2018 by Carlos Cashman and Joshua Silberstein — the largest of the 'Amazon aggregators' that bought and consolidated third-party Amazon sellers. It acquired hundreds of Amazon brands, applying its ranking, review, supply-chain and marketing playbook to scale them, and became one of the largest third-party sellers on the marketplace. Riding the COVID e-commerce boom, it raised $3.4B in debt and equity (Silver Lake, Oaktree, Goldman Sachs AM, Advent) at a peak valuation near $10B, with ~1,100 employees. On February 28, 2024 it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, emerging in June 2024 as a smaller, leaner company under CEO Stephanie Fox.
02 / Thrasio FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Thrasio's collapse was a debt-fueled rollup gone wrong: it bought hundreds of brands at COVID-era multiples just as e-commerce growth normalized, and rising interest rates made its massive debt pile unserviceable. Growth it couldn't operationally support — integrating hundreds of acquisitions while keeping each brand's performance — became chaos with good top-line numbers. As consumers resumed normal shopping habits, Thrasio's cash flows buckled under debt payments; it conducted layoffs and saw a CEO change in 2022 before the February 2024 Chapter 11 filing. The post-bankruptcy company survived only by cutting $495M of debt and selling off or shutting down underperforming brands.
