Jokr
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Jokr was a Berlin-based instant grocery delivery startup founded in 2021 by Ralf Wenzel, a former Delivery Hero executive. It promised supermarket delivery in 15 minutes from a network of dark stores, launching in New York and Boston in June 2021 and across Europe and Latin America. The company reached unicorn status in December 2021 with a $260 million Series B at a $1.2 billion valuation. In 2022 it exited Europe (after about six months, with no buyer found) and the US (June 2022), retreating to Latin America and eventually a Brazil-only strategy. It raised a $50 million Series D in September 2023 and continues to operate in Brazil.
02 / Jokr FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The ultrafast delivery model never made money: on-demand services lost as much as $20 per order. Jokr was losing under $10 million per month in Latin America alone. When rising interest rates and unstable markets killed investor appetite for risky bets, funding dried up. The company faced dozens of rivals — Gorillas, Getir, GoPuff, Buyk — in a bruising price war, just as post-pandemic demand dwindled. The US business, only 5% of the total, and Europe (1%) were shut down as distractions from the LatAm core.
