CommonFloor
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
CommonFloor was an Indian real estate listings portal founded in 2007 in Bangalore. It ran an online classifieds platform for buying, selling and renting homes across some 200 Indian cities, with about 500,000 active property listings, and operated Flatchat, a flatmate-finding app. The company raised about $42 million in venture funding.
02 / CommonFloor FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
CommonFloor struggled with monetization and failed to raise additional funding, so in January 2016 it accepted a mostly-stock acquisition by classifieds portal Quikr, reportedly worth $100-200 million. Within months the buyer fired more than 150 CommonFloor employees and shut the company's Bangalore office; a year later all three co-founders quit and the brand was gradually discontinued inside QuikrHomes.
