Thread
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Thread was a London AI fashion personalization startup founded in 2012 by Kieran O'Neill and Ben Phillips. Its marketplace combined human stylists with machine learning: shoppers took a style questionnaire and uploaded photos, then got recommendations personalized across 50+ style elements (eye colour, body shape, fit, fabric, brand), with clothes sourced from fashion retailers including M&S, Liberty, Harvey Nichols and Urban Outfitters. It started in menswear and later added women's tailoring. Backed by Balderton, H&M's CO:LAB, Beringea and DeepMind co-founders Demis Hassabis and Mustafa Suleyman, it raised over $40M. On November 30, 2022 it went into pre-pack administration; Marks & Spencer acquired its brand, technology and data and hired 30 of its staff including the founders.
02 / Thread FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Thread's failure was the classic capital-intensive marketplace squeeze: after 10 years and over $40M raised, its AI personalization — proven to lift conversion and repeat orders — never translated into sustainable unit economics as an independent retailer. Record inflation in 2022 crushed discretionary fashion spending, and suppliers described the collapse as 'a sign of the times' with retailers struggling to drive sales. The end came suddenly: three weeks before Christmas, the company was placed into administration, leaving 30+ staff jobless and suppliers 'in the dark,' while a Crowdcube investor said shareholders were never told the company needed more money. The technology was sound enough that M&S bought it; the standalone business wasn't.
