01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Hyperink was a San Francisco ebook-publishing startup founded in January 2011 by Kevin Gao (with Min Ming Lo). A Y Combinator Winter 2011 company, it reinvented publishing as a fast, niche-first service: it paired aspiring authors with professional journalists who co-authored books in under a month at under $1,000 production cost, and paid authors up to 50% royalties. It raised $1.2 million from Andreessen Horowitz, Y Combinator, SV Angel, Lerer Ventures and others. Y Combinator now lists it as Inactive.
