01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Semantic Health was a Toronto-based healthcare AI company founded in 2019 and led by CEO Dr. Nicola Sahar, a University of Toronto medical graduate and former natural language processing researcher at the Vector Institute for AI. After two years of product development, it emerged publicly in June 2021 with the Semantic Health Information Platform — AI-powered inpatient medical auditing software that analyzes unstructured patient data to help hospitals and health insurance plans improve medical coding, auditing, clinical documentation (CDI) and documentation quality, reducing denials. Customers included Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids, a multi-year contract after a pilot showing up to 30% higher coding efficiency and 25% better data quality) and Humber River Hospital. The company raised about $2.7 million.
