01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

lipa (lipa.swiss) was a Swiss seed-stage fintech/Bitcoin startup whose name stood for 'Lightning Payments'. It built two apps around Bitcoin Lightning: the lipa Wallet for consumers and a Wallet for Business, designed to make sending and receiving money via Lightning fast and seamless. It was a non-custodial design — users owned the keys to their bitcoin balance, and even lipa could not access funds. A 2023 redesign with the UI agency blokk gave the wallet a minimalist interface.

02 / lipa FAILURE REASONS

Failure factors

Official wallet discontinuation notice states Lightning depended entirely on Breez SDK Native (Greenlight), which Breez was ending 31 Dec, so the wallet could not continue in its then form from Jan 2026; lipa also decided not to migrate to Breez Nodeless because of low user numbers.

Dependency On Partner

Wallet Lightning functionality was fully built on Breez SDK Native, which the partner discontinued.

Insufficient Traction

Company decided not to migrate to an alternative Breez SDK due to low user numbers.
